eSoft Ready for Conficker

Multi-Layered Approach of eSoft’s Integrated Internet Security Appliances Preps Customers for Newly Discovered Worms and Viruses

Broomfield, Colo. – March 27, 2009– eSoft, Inc., a leading network security company that provides integrated Internet security solutions, announced today that its current customers are protected against the much hyped Conficker worm, also known as the Downadup, Downup and Kido worm. The Conficker worm, which has been in the news due to its prolific nature, spreads primarily using a vulnerability in the Windows Server service, which is used to allow Windows computers to share files and printers on a system. It may also spread through removable media such as CD's and USB thumb drives via the AutoRun feature.

"This worm is just one of many threats emerging every day that eSoft's Threat Prevention Team works around the clock to protect against," said Patrick Walsh, eSoft's Director of Product Management and Marketing. "As threats evolve, so does eSoft's protection. Automatic updates make things easier for our customers but it must be enabled in order to work, so we're urging them to make sure their eSoft appliances are kept up-to-date and that automatic updates are enabled on a schedule."

eSoft provides multiple layers of protection through a number of security features including:

  • Intrusion Prevention (IPS): Appliances with IPS in “Aggressive” mode will block exploit attempts of the Windows Server vulnerability that originate outside of the trusted networks effectively blocking the spread of the worm. Note: IPS is installed with any ThreatPak.
  • Gateway Anti-Virus (GAV): eSoft’s Anti-Virus team has created hundreds of signatures for the various variants of the Conficker worm. Note: GAV is installed with any ThreatPak.
  • SiteFilter: When Conficker infects a computer, it “calls home” to a web server to check for updates and instructions. eSoft has taken all 50,000 possible call home domains and added them to its Spyware/Malicious category, which is blocked by default when SiteFilter is enabled. Note: SiteFilter is installed with the Web ThreatPak.
  • Distributed Intelligence Architecture (DIA): eSoft provides customers with real-time updates so that new malicious web sites are blocked the moment they are found.
  • Firewall: By default, the InstaGate’s firewall blocks TCP ports 139 and 445 at the gateway, which are primary vectors of the spread of this worm.

eSoft customers with questions regarding this threat are urged to view eSoft's FAQ on the subject (http://esoft.com/alerts/downadup-conficker.cfm).
